Kumari of the Woods
Why Kumari of the Woods?
In 2021, my son Ben, a dedicated heating and plumbing contractor and reflective forest dweller, and I, an unconventional mother, artist, and healer, began developing our vision for a Forest Bathing Retreat. Four years later, we are grateful for generous donations and exhausted by unexpected costs, having navigated with sheer stubbornness the challenging Vermont land use permit process (Act 250). We are now focused on completing Phase I and preparing for bookings starting August 1st. Some may question our determination.
The Vision
Initially, our vision centered on inviting artists—writers and visual creators—to the forest for inspiration. However, small business advisors suggested our idea was too narrow, prompting us to expand our outreach. With my growing grief coaching practice, I recognized the profound benefits of connecting our grief work with the trees, which have long held ancestral grief.
Who We Serve
At Kumari of the Woods, we cater to those seeking tranquility for self-care, the beauty of changing seasons, or simply a space to walk, rest, and unwind. This summer, 2025, marks the Grand Opening of Phase I, featuring two all-season cottages, fully equipped for your stay, as well as three minimalist Hideaways that offer a glamping experience in our woods. The Hideaways come with composting toilets and bottled artisan well water, ensuring comfort in nature.
Looking Ahead
Phase I takes us to the next chapter of our business. We eagerly anticipate continued support from our lender, Brian Stark of Nuvida Funding in New York City, who became a crucial part of our journey last December. Beyond financial assistance, Brian shares our mission and values, believing in the healing power of nature. Though his urban landscape is vastly different from ours, he appreciates the beauty of Vermont, akin to the freedom symbolized by the Statue of Liberty, the view outside his window.
Our Commitment
We aim to inspire, heal, and restore faith within a No-Hate Zone. In Phases II and III, we will offer guests additional classes, including yoga, mindfulness, qigong, seated and walking meditations, and sound therapy. By the opening of Phase III, we envision a space where artists can showcase their work, engage in discussions, and facilitate weekend workshops, fostering connections between our guests and the community of Strafford, Vermont, and surrounding areas.
Daily Operations
I will be more involved in the daily operations of Kumari of the Woods, while Ben will remain close by in the original log house, tending his extensive permaculture gardens and ready to assist with any mechanical issues. Guests may even hear him drumming in the forest or gathering stones for future projects.
I feel incredibly blessed to wake up each day to the stunning landscape before me and to have Ben as my business partner, whose calm wisdom inspires me. We invite you to book your stay through our website or Airbnb. As you travel along two miles of dirt roads past large farmhouses and rustic trailers, know that in the wild beauty of the forest, you will find no judgment, no hate, and no expectations—just a space to be yourself. When you see the wooden sign marking our driveway, "Kumari of the Woods," you will feel truly Welcomed in our Woods.
